Ruth Webber
Career coach

“Work takes up so much of our lives in time and energy, that it is crucial that your job gives you what you need practically and emotionally”

About me

I have had a long and varied career, working for large and small companies and running my own marketing and communication consultancy for more than 20 years in Glasgow, Scotland. My last position was Manager of the Communication Office at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. When I ‘retired’ in July 2021, I decided to become a career coach and put my experience to good use. In September 2022 I qualified from the Academy for Coaching and Counselling. Further details of my work experience can be found on my LinkedIn profile.

Why I became a coach

Throughout my career, I found myself coaching or mentoring colleagues and sometimes clients and enjoyed it. More formally, I became a volunteer coach/mentor with PSYBT (now the Prince’s Trust) supporting young business owners to achieve their goals. In 2009, I won the PSYBT Volunteer of the Year Award. I was fortunate to find a career that gave me variety and fulfilment, so I want to help other people achieve that same satisfaction, by exploring their talents, potential, values and goals.

What coaching is and isn’t

Many people think that if they come to a coach, they will get all the suggestions and answers they need to find a more satisfying career. Coaching is not quite like that. A coach will help you to explore what it is that will give you purpose and meaning in your work and facilitate you to discover and evaluate options, but the coach does not direct or advise you and it is for you to make decisions. This makes sense, as you will learn more about yourself during the coaching process, understand what your priorities and values are and find the resources to make confident decisions yourself. Going through this process will serve you well when faced with future challenges in your professional and personal life.

FAQs

  • Whether you are at the beginning, middle or end of your career, facing retirement, if you are not sure what to do next, coaching is for you. If you are looking for a career or activities which will bring purpose and satisfaction to your life, coaching will help you find your way.

  • After an initial free online conversation, if you decide you want career coaching, we start with an intake session. At this meeting, I will clarify the nature of your challenge and what you want to achieve and you agree to an initial series of one hour coaching conversations (five is the usual number but this will be discussed and agreed). Payment for this series will be required before starting the coaching programme. Coaching can be extended beyond this series by mutual agreement.

  • Frequency of coaching sessions is usually every two weeks, but this can be modified if necessary, in discussion with me.

  • Sessions can be conducted online or face to face in Delft, depending on your preference.

  • Cancellation of session or change of date must be made a minimum of 24 hours in advance if possible, otherwise the session will be charged for.

  • Following the initial free online conversation, each session of one hour costs €90, so a series of five sessions costs €450.

“Coaching is a very positive experience - it allows you to take stock and move forward with renewed confidence. The process progressed my situation and working with Ruth I developed a very helpful narrative on which to build. It's incredibly helpful to bring a fresh pair of eyes to your career and take stock. One of those experiences where you feel a degree of nervousness sharing your private professional space but I would highly recommend it”.

“Ruth gave good feedback, paid attention to bringing things up from previous sessions and linking them well so I could see the relevance. Very attentive to new topics that were more relevant to discuss and nicely correlating it to other topics we had already discussed. Also used her own experience/ common experiences to make a situation more personal/ relatable and creating trust. Very attentive to my behavioural patterns and knowing when they are coming up”.

— N, Rotterdam

“Ruth was concerned about me as a client - she asked about what was going on in my life every session, following up from what we had discussed previously. She was a careful, sympathetic listener and provided sensible, measured feedback. I felt she was very supportive, positive, respectful and a clear communicator”.
